Bless The Biker, Big Breakfast & Ride-Out

Sunday 10th April 2011

Around 50 people and 40 bikes turned up at the City Hall for the ride to Willowfield Parish Church where we had bacon, sausage and egg rolls before the service.

The ride-out took us through Ballygowan, Comber, Newtownards, Ballywalter, Cloughy and Portaferry by the coast road then back to my house for tea/coffee and biscuits.

The whole day went very well with the weather and lack of other vehicles on the road in our favour.

Walking Tour of Historic Belfast Pubs

Friday 25th April 2011

“This walking tour of the historic pubs of Belfast took place last Friday night, April 25th 2011.  A group of 25 people met at the Crown Bar, opposite the Europa Hotel, in central Belfast.  Our guide was Colin, who is a Blue Badge guide, provided by the company run by judycrawford@belfast pubtours.com. After an initial drink in the Crown, Colin took us outside for a potted history on the bar, and after this, people could go inside for another look at the artifacts which he had pointed out.  It was fun to hear about the ghost!

We then made our way to the Garrick, a wonderful pub with two front doors in a triangle, which made it easy for someone to slip inside unnoticed for a quick one, and to slip out again equally unnoticed.  From there, it was just a short walk to the Cafe Vaudeville, once a former Bank, and retaining its wonderful interior architecture, with some tastefully added pieces of further decoration.  Time for another drink!

We then made our way to that wonderful small but perfectly formed pub, Bittles Bar, full of paintings of politicians, said to be a real old man’s pub, spotlessly clean, and containing a huge selection of whiskies.  Lunch is served here daily.

Our final port of call was Mc Hugh’s bar, the former notorious Dubarry’s.  During the tour, Colin called our attention to some wonderful buildings en route, such as the Linen Hall Library opposite the City Hall.  It was a beautiful clear night, we really were blessed with the weather, and it was lovely to see the old buildings lit up and looking quite spectacular.  It certainly gave most of us food for thought , to return and perhaps to explore more  and to proudly take visitors around at a later date. We were given enough information to make for a pleasant evening, without overload which could have been  boring.”
