Bee Apiary, Innisfree in Cullybackey, Co Antrim.
Friday 27th May 2011 – Starting 6.00 pm
Price for this great evening is a group donation of £30.00 to the Ulster Beekeepers’ Federation
This peaceful relaxing night will take place on Friday, May 27th from 6.30pm. The apiary is in the middle of a natural forest, about 200 years old. There is plenty of parking for cars and motorbikes, and the bees will welcome you all! It is perfectly safe, and there will be a little talk first of all on the life of the honey bee, and then you will be able to see the hives being opened and see the bees at work. This is the best time of day, and the best month for observation – the bees will be returning to the hive exhausted, after many trips out during the day; the hives will not be at optimum occupancy (normally 80,00 – 100,00 bees per box in high summer), and you will see pollen, nectar, honey and of course, these very busy little creatures. And if you really behave, you might catch a glimpse of me in my bee suit!
Wasps are the dangerous ones, as they can sting and sting again, but the bees only sting once, and their sting is supposed to be beneficial for anyone suffering with arthritis. It is so important to cultivate bees as diseases are wiping them out very fast, and the Federation is always looking for new beekeepers.
Price for this great evening is a group donation of £30.00 to the Ulster Beekeepers’ Federation, so I will probably collect£2.00 from everyone, a cheap date! And there are lots of pubs in Cullybackey too. Yo!
DIRECTIONS TO THE APIARY AT CULLYBACKEY
Leave the motorway from Belfast at Ballymena Junction (A26) Continue along the dual carriageway to Ballymena. At the Seven Towers Roundabout, go straight into town. Cross the bridge and follow the signs for Cullybackey (keep in left hand lane of A3 carriageway past Mc Donald’s, and turn left after the Maxol Garage. Continue to Cullybackey and go straight through the village. Pass the Cunningham Church on the right hand side, cross the bridge and turn right at the sign for Kilrea and Garvagh (B93) Take 2nd right – Dunminning Road (sign for Craigs Parish Church) Turn first left – Carclinty Road. Travel approx 400 yards and turn right at wooden gates into laneway just before a well-manicured green hedge. Continue down laneway to the apiary car park.
